Coconut Love

There are many studies offering evidence that coconuts are one of the healthiest foods on the planet.  I always knew coconuts were good for you but I had no idea just how nutrient-rich and beneficial they really are!  Let’s break it down and see why this fruit is so powerful, shall we?

Weight Loss

Coconut oil is made up of fatty acids and healthy saturated fat which take longer to digest.  This eases the digestive process over time, allowing the fats to be converted into energy rather than being stored as fat – something we all love to hear!  

Disease Prevention

Coconut's properties help convert bad cholesterol (LDL) to good cholesterol (LDL), which can lower the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the US according to the CDC.  The #1 cause of death?!?  Let’s start taking preventative measures early by adding a little coconut to our lives.

Immunity Boost

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is known to fight bacteria and create a hostile environment for viruses.  Try adding coconut oil to food when cooking to reap its benefits as an integral part of everyday living.

Anti-Aging Benefits

Research suggests that the antioxidant levels in coconut oil may slow aging by reducing stress on the liver and lowering oxidative stress during digestion.  I have used coconut oil for years as a moisturizer too.  You can become a little grease monster so you won't want to slather it on daily, but it will feel wonderful on those especially cold, dry days.


Studies suggest coconut water (not coconut milk) may provide more hydration and contribute to recovery better than other sports drinks. It is lower in calories and a natural source of electrolytes such as sodium and magnesium. Not only that, but it also provides other overall health benefits because it contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids.  


A final note: Not all coconut water is created equal.  Supermarkets and convenience stores are flooded with different types of coconut water with countless celebrity endorsements.  But don’t be fooled!  Make sure to read the labels and compare.  Many of brands use GMO’s and have “added natural flavors”. My go-to’s are Purity Organic and Coco Libre because they are pure, organic, and easy to come by at most places in NYC.
